I’m in a New York State of Mind features one of Johnny X’s early works—a monochromatic portrait of Billy Joel capturing the introspective character of an artist whose music became inseparable from the city that shaped him.

Billy rests his head against his hand, cigarette between his fingers, caught somewhere between exhaustion and contemplation.

Rendered almost entirely in black, white and gray, the artwork strips away spectacle and leaves behind something quieter:

It feels like New York after midnight.

The crowds have disappeared. The piano has gone silent. The last drink sits unfinished somewhere on the bar, and for a moment the city allows you to hear yourself think.

New York can be ambitious and exhausting, romantic and lonely, beautiful and unforgiving—sometimes all within the same night.

Billy Joel gave that contradiction a soundtrack.

Johnny X gave it a portrait.
