Some people make music. Others become part of the cultural vocabulary.
Hee Heee!!! captures Michael Jackson not simply as a performer, but as an instantly recognizable force in popular culture—an artist whose sound, movement, fashion and eccentricity became impossible to separate from the era he helped define.
The fedora. The curls. The stare. The red. And, of course, that unmistakable sound:
Hee Heee!!!
Set against layers of newspaper, the portrait becomes part celebrity image, part historical artifact. Headlines, photographs and fragments of culture surround him, reflecting the strange relationship between an icon and the media machine that documents, celebrates, scrutinizes and ultimately helps construct the mythology around them.
The painting doesn't attempt to explain Michael Jackson.
It doesn't need to.
Few artists have left behind a visual and cultural language so recognizable that a silhouette, a hat—or two syllables—can immediately summon an entire legacy.
That is exactly what Newsmakers is about.
The people who didn't simply appear in the news.
They became the news.
