Beauty and mortality have always belonged to the same story.

Skull and Roses is one of Johnny X’s earliest works—a painting created at the beginning of his artistic journey, before the language of Johnny X had fully formed, yet already carrying the contradictions that would become central to his work.

Against an unapologetically pink field sits a gray skull.

One eye becomes a black glittering heart. The other blooms into a red rose. Between its teeth rests another rose, its green stem cutting horizontally across the composition toward a shimmering red bud.

The symbols shouldn't necessarily belong together.

And that's precisely why they do.

Death surrounded by color.
Darkness carrying love.
Beauty emerging from decay.

The skull reminds us that life is finite. The roses answer that impermanence with beauty. The heart introduces love into the equation—as though even mortality cannot escape it.

There is romance in the painting, but also humor and rebellion. It refuses to make death entirely dark or love entirely delicate.

Created early in Johnny X’s evolution as an artist, Skull and Roses offers a glimpse of themes that would continue to surface throughout his work:

Love and loss. Beauty and decay. Darkness and color. Life and death.

And somehow, right in the middle of it all—

a rose.
