Against a brilliant yellow field, dozens of colorful hearts overlap, collide, and dance around a large central heart. Reds, oranges, greens, blues, and violets create an explosion of warmth and optimism.

Looking back at the painting years later reveals something that would become central to Johnny X’s work: although the artistic language changed dramatically, the heart never really disappeared.
