Some people make music. Others become part of the cultural vocabulary.
Hee Heee!!! captures Michael Jackson as more than a performer. He became an image, a sound, a movement and ultimately a cultural phenomenon recognized across generations.
The fedora. The curls. The stare. The red.
And, of course:
Hee Heee!!!
Johnny X places the portrait directly over layers of newspaper, surrounding the figure with fragments of the very media culture that documented, celebrated, scrutinized and helped construct the mythology of one of the most famous entertainers in modern history.
There is something deliberate about preserving the newspaper beneath the paint.
Michael Jackson existed simultaneously as artist and headline. His music could dominate the charts while his every movement could dominate the news. Eventually, separating the performer from the phenomenon became nearly impossible.
Hee Heee!!! doesn't attempt to explain the man behind that phenomenon.
Instead, it captures what remains unmistakable.
An icon so deeply embedded in popular culture that a hat, a silhouette—or two syllables—is enough.
That is the territory of Newsmakers.
The people who didn't simply appear in the news.
They became the news.
