Beauty and mortality have always belonged to the same story.
Skull and Roses is one of Johnny X’s earliest paintings—a work created before the visual language of Johnny X had fully evolved, yet already carrying many of the contradictions that would later become central to his art.
A gray skull emerges against an unapologetically pink field.
One eye has become a black glittering heart. The other has been overtaken by a red rose. Between its teeth rests another rose, its green stem stretching across the composition toward a shimmering red bud.
Death surrounded by color.
Darkness carrying love.
Something beautiful growing from something that should signify an ending.
The imagery is playful, romantic and slightly macabre, refusing to treat life and death as opposites. Instead, Skull and Roses places them beside one another—as if to suggest that the knowledge that everything eventually ends is precisely what makes beauty, love and being alive worth celebrating.
Created early in Johnny X’s artistic journey, the work offers a glimpse of an artist already fascinated by juxtaposition:
