Beauty and mortality have always belonged to the same story.

Skull and Roses is one of Johnny X’s earliest paintings—a glimpse into the beginnings of an artistic language that would eventually become defined by contradiction, symbolism and transformation.

Against an unapologetically pink field sits a gray skull.

One eye becomes a black glittering heart. The other blooms into a red rose. Another rose rests between its teeth, stretching across the composition toward a shimmering red bud.

Death surrounded by color.

Darkness carrying love.

Beauty growing from something associated with an ending.

There is humor in it. Romance. A little rebellion. And the reminder that knowing life is temporary might be exactly what makes it worth celebrating.

Even at the beginning, the contradictions were already there:

Love and loss.
Beauty and decay.
Darkness and color.
Life and death.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it—

a rose.
